IMPACT GENERATED - (expected in 10 years)
Overview
Würth Italy embraced innovation and sustainability by installing an energy-generating floor at their Egna headquarters. This initiative, inspired by their Impulso Innovation Contest, exemplifies how businesses can integrate creative solutions into daily operations to achieve environmental goals. Collaborating with Energy Floors, Würth Italy has transformed a routine activity—walking to the cafeteria—into an energy-boosting practice that directly improves the building’s energy efficiency.
“Innovation is part of Würth’s corporate DNA, and it was natural for us to turn to our employees to come up with and develop new sustainable solutions,”
Nicola Piazza, CEO of Würth Italy.
Details
- Location: Egna, Bolzano, Italy
- Date of Installation: October 2024
- Context: Idea selected from Würth’s Impulso Innovation Contest to promote sustainability and digital transformation.
- Number of Kinetic Tiles: 8 (2×4) 1.5M x 3.0 M
- Daily usage: +/- 400 people per day
- Daily energy generation: 2400 joules
Set Up
The energy floor, constructed using recycled and durable materials like glass, steel, and aluminum, was strategically installed on the walkway leading to the cafeteria. This high-traffic location ensures maximum footfall, with approximately 400 daily visitors contributing around 1,200 steps.
The floor uses electromechanical conversion technology: pressure from each step powers a small gear and dynamo, converting kinetic motion into electricity. The generated energy is reintegrated into the building’s system to enhance energy efficiency.
