The Walker in Rotterdam:
Smart city sidewalk powers electric cars
We proudly present the first smart and sustainable sidewalk in the Dutch neighbourhood, Rotterdam Reyeroord.
The ‘solar energy sidewalk’ delivers power to a multifunctional light pole, the CENT-R. The light pole is a visual landmark and a charging station for electric cars. It generates power for 320 people to charge their mobile phones for one year long or for an electric car to drive about 4000 kilometers.
‘The Walker’ from Energy Floors not only generates power via its solar panels. It is also programmed to interact with the pedestrians in a really fun and exciting way. The LED solar, walkable tiles react to walking, dancing or jumping. Children – and not only – can finally game outside their rooms! In this way, we engage citizens in the smart city experience and encourage the production of local energy.
This project in Rotterdam is made possible by ENGIE, Lightwell, Gemeente Rotterdam and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency. We are proud to be part of this public project which engages, raises awareness on sustainable energy and connects the neighbourhood.
