Coldplay’s music often invites us to look up at the stars and imagine a better world. From the hopeful tones of “Sky Full of Stars” to the universal themes in Music of the Spheres, the band has long inspired fans to dream bigger, not just about life, but about the planet we all share. Their Music of the Spheres world tour isn’t just another concert series; it’s a bold statement about the future of live entertainment and environmental responsibility. By pioneering a truly sustainable global tour, Coldplay is setting a new standard for what green touring can look like on the biggest stages worldwide.
As we explored in our previous blog on how festivals and tours are becoming more sustainable, artists and event organisers now play a vital role in reducing environmental impact. From energy use to waste reduction and audience engagement, there’s a growing movement to transform live music into a platform for climate action. A key framework helping guide this transformation is the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These 17 goals target the world’s most urgent challenges, from climate action and clean energy to responsible consumption and innovation. If you missed it, check out our earlier blog on how Energy Floors aligns with the SDGs.
A tour designed to reduce, reinvent, and restore
Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres tour is built around three sustainability pillars: Reduce, Reinvent, and Restore. The band aims to cut emissions by 50% compared to their previous tour, avoid fossil fuels wherever possible, and support projects that draw down even more carbon than the tour produces. Working with partners like DHL, BMW and Energy Floors, Coldplay is rethinking everything, from travel and logistics to stage power and audience waste management. This huge effort showcases how live entertainment can meaningfully contribute to the SDGs. Let’s explore the most significant ones.
SDG 7: Affordable and clean energy
One of the tour’s flagship sustainability goals is clean energy. The entire stage production runs on a blend of solar power, sustainable biofuels, and batteries made from recycled BMW i3 cells. An innovative element of the tour is the kinetic dance floors installed in stadiums, which capture the energy generated by fans’ movement to help power the show. As fans jump, dance, and move, their energy is captured and stored in batteries that help power the show. This technology not only provides clean energy but also makes the audience active participants in the energy transition. Energy Floors makes SDG 7 tangible, exciting, and measurable.
SDG 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure
The tour partners with technology leaders to reinvent live music infrastructure. From mobile renewable energy storage to a fan app that tracks and incentivises low-carbon travel, Coldplay leverages innovation at every turn. Energy Floors is proud to be part of this ecosystem. Our kinetic floors don’t just generate electricity; they demonstrate how new forms of energy infrastructure can thrive even in packed stadiums full of dancing fans.
SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities
Coldplay’s tour also supports building more sustainable cities and communities by working closely with venues, local authorities, and the fans themselves. Encouraging fans to use public transport and low-carbon travel options helps reduce traffic congestion and emissions around event sites. By promoting waste reduction, water efficiency, and supporting local suppliers, the tour fosters environmentally responsible urban experiences that benefit residents, visitors, and the communities of fans who come together around the music.
SDG 13: Climate action
Coldplay’s tour exemplifies climate-conscious event planning. By optimising travel routes, using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and deploying electric vehicles on the ground, the band drastically reduces emissions. For unavoidable emissions, they invest in carbon offsetting through reforestation, rewilding, and ocean conservation projects. The kinetic floors further educate fans on sustainable behaviour by showing how movement can generate power, bringing SDG 13’s call for climate action to life in a unique way.
Other SDGs Coldplay supports
Beyond energy and climate, the tour promotes SDG 6 (Clean Water) through water-saving measures and refill stations; SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 15 (Life on Land) via partnerships with The Ocean Cleanup and One Tree Planted; and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by collaborating with organisations to scale sustainable solutions across the industry.
Where we fit in
Energy Floors is honoured to supply kinetic floor systems worldwide for this tour. We help convert audience movement into clean energy while sparking awareness about how electricity can be generated differently. It’s inspiring to see how something as simple as dancing becomes a powerful force for sustainability. Want to make sustainability part of your event experience? Our kinetic energy dance floors turn audience movement into clean power, making your climate goals visible, fun, and achievable.
