Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

General Information

We have two types of floors: a kinetic energy floor (The Dancer) and a solar powered energy floor (The Walker and The Gamer).

Our kinetic energy floor is typically used for indoor installations, ranging from marketing events to the entrance of buildings. The solar floor is solely installed outside, mainly as permanent installations.

Therefore, the information we need will depend on what kind of floor you require. Typically, we need to know the location, budget, concept and if you require any customisable features. Once we have this information we can connect you to the right sales colleague.

Our main geographical markets are Europe and North America where most of our demand comes from.

We tend not to ship to Africa and Asia as logistics costs become too high.

Yes, depending on the installation you choose, we can customise the design, lights and on-screen text to reflect your brand aesthetic or include your logo.

Our floors are assembled in The Netherlands. However, we outsource various components from overseas distributors.

Most of our inventory is in The Netherlands. We have a handful of reserve floors in North America, and some European countries. We also have a partner supplier in Australia.

The total system is designed to be energy negative over its technical lifespan, which is estimated at 15 years approximately. Therefore all energy needed for manufacturing of the components, plus the assembly, can be compensated by the energy production of the tiles during their usage. The energy production however is very much depending on the location and its specific use.

We have several installations that are running for over 10 years and the efficiency is not going down. We keep monitoring energy production and improving our technology to make it more energy efficient.

For temporary installations the energy production does not balance out the energy for manufacture and installation. Here the biggest impact is made by creating awareness with the public about renewable energy and how their behaviour influences the energy in a location.

We expect our installations to last 10 years minimum. All installations are modular, meaning we can replace broken parts with ease and relatively quickly and low cost. All components are sent to our warehouse to be refurbished. Only when this is not feasible anymore do we recycle those parts.

Since our technology and floors are still very new and innovative it is difficult to compete with existing energy converters that are mass produced. Our technology has additional value in the visibility and interactivity that helps communicate sustainability to the public, and engage them in the sustainability efforts of the location. With scaling up our volume of tiles we will become more and more competitive in the future. Without the smartness and the interactivity components our installations generally are considered to have too low a ROI.

The Dancer

Kinetic Energy Floor

General Information

The Dancer or The Sustainable Kinetic Dance Floor is what we call the kinetic energy floor. We named it The Dancer because it started out as a dancefloor but has since grown to be used for a range of industries.

For temporary installations at events, the price typically starts at around 3000 EUR and can go into the tens of thousands for large scale events over a number of days/weeks, especially if these are overseas.

For a fixed installation of The Dancer for offices or shopping centres, for example, the price is dependent on the size, location and overall scale of the project. On average, we can estimate that a small sized permanent installation will cost 20k EUR

Activations is a term used in marketing or event planning to launch or promote a product or service. Marketing activations engage the public in an activity or task that ‘activates’ your chosen product in creative ways.

It helps brands stay relevant and test out new ideas amongst their targeted demographic. Upon experiencing the activation, customers should come away with a positive or reinforced feeling towards the brand, together with an understanding of their values, for example, the green agenda.

Our team are creative and can help you think of a unique activation to reflect your brand, product or service.

You can read more about this in our blog Experiential marketing x Sustainability: successful brand activations.

We offer solutions to meet our clients needs including both short- and long-term fixtures.

We install dancefloors at international festivals, trade shows and exhibitions, corporate events, museums and science centres or branding/sporting activations.

We also have experience at private parties, pop-up events and even at national monuments!

We also have permanent kinetic floor installations in smart buildings. See for example The Dancer floor modules at the AFAS HQ in NL or the Green Pea Mall in Turin.

Dancer Technical Information

The floor converts the movement of the public into electricity. When you dance or step on the floor modules, an internal mechanical process is set in motion which is connected to a dynamo. The dynamo converts the movement into electricity which is fed into a battery storage.

Depending on the weight of the step, the floor will produce around 2 Watts output per step, and for dancing and jumping this can go up to 35 Watts.

The kinetic tiles are constructed from glass, steel, recycled plastic and electronics. All components can easily be separated and recycled when they are at the end of their lifecycle.

Each floor module measures: 750x750x200mm. Please factor this in when designing the floor plan.

Each floor module weighs 47kg.

Full specifications can be found in The Dancer Brochures with tech specs.

The modules are placed individually on or within an existing floor.

The modules are all connected to a central control unit that gathers all the energy and all the data. In the controller our clients decide how the energy and data is used.

Installation and disassembly usually takes no more than a few hours. However, for larger projects, installation could take up to a couple of days.

We send a minimum of one engineer to install the floors. And depending on the scale of the project, this could be an entire team.

The Walker & The Gamer

Smart Solar Energy Floor

General Information

The Walker is the name we have given to our solar energy floor modules. We named it The Walker because it is built outside in areas where the public can walk on and interact with through games or data visualisation.

Typically, a Walker installation is categorised under our work in smart cities. See more on The Walker webpage.

Typically, a playground installation at a school in the Netherlands will cost around 14,500 EURO, excluding vat. But there is funding available for a lot of Dutch schools. [link] The floor is a permanent installation and will last up to 10 years and becomes carbon-neutral after 5 years. New games are developed and can be installed on the floor throughout its lifetime.

The price can vary for smart city innovations that want to use our solar energy modules for larger public areas. This includes size of the floor and any customisations. Pricing also needs to take into account international locations. Sending equipment from Rotterdam is easy, but logistics must be factored in.

Note that all our Walker installations are permanent and will last a minimum of 10 years before they need to be updated.

No. Although both products are designed and built with solar floor modules, The Gamer is exclusively for outdoor educational spaces, namely school yards and public parks.

Gamers are programmed with games for children to play, aged 5 – 12 years old.

The Walker is designed for urban planning and smart cities. It can be programmed with data of the client’s choice such as energy production, footfall or additional lighting.

Our Walkers cater to the smart city industry where tech meets innovation. They can be installed on any outdoor public space that benefits from direct sunlight.

For example, we have installed Walkers outside train stations, shopping centres and in car parks. Other ideas include sidewalks, rooftop gardens and public parks.

The total amount of energy generated depends on a number of factors. For example, how many modules you install, as well as the exposure to the sun.

Our solar energy floor modules generate energy from the sun through integrated PV panels and feeds it back into the grid. These solar tiles produce up to 100 Watt per square meter and have around 70% efficiency.

All components are sustainably manufactured. The main components consist of photovoltaics in glass top layers. The foundation is made of recycled plastics and rubber where possible. Some components require new components.

The modules are placed individually on or within an existing floor.

The modules are all connected to a central control unit that gathers all the energy and data. In the controller our clients decide how the energy and data is used.

Installation and disassembly usually takes no more than a few hours. However, for larger projects, installation could take a couple of days.

We send a minimum of one engineer to install the floors. And depending on the scale of the project, this could be an entire team.

Each floor module measures: 600 x 600 x 122mm.

Each floor module weighs 19kg.
